Your child's first dental visit: when to go and what to expect

Many parents wait until their child complains of toothache before booking a dental visit. By then, a small problem may already need a filling. A first visit while teeth are still healthy is easier on your child and on your budget.

When should the first visit be?

The general guideline is by your child’s first birthday, or within six months of the first tooth appearing. At this age the visit is short and gentle. The main goals are to check how the teeth and gums are developing and to let your child become familiar with the dental chair.

What happens at the appointment?

  • Your child usually sits on your lap or in the chair with you close by.
  • The dentist counts the teeth, checks the gums and looks for early signs of decay.
  • You’ll get advice on brushing, toothpaste, bottles, dummies and thumb-sucking.
  • If your child is older, the teeth may be cleaned and fluoride applied.

How to prepare your child

Keep your language positive and simple. Phrases like “the dentist will count your teeth” work better than “it won’t hurt”, which can plant the idea of pain. Reading a picture book about visiting the dentist, or playing “dentist” with a toothbrush at home, also helps. Book a time of day when your child is usually rested and fed.

Why early visits matter

Milk teeth hold space for adult teeth, help with speech and allow children to chew properly. Decay in milk teeth can cause pain, infection and early tooth loss. Regular check-ups from a young age mean problems are picked up while they are small, and children grow up seeing the dentist as a normal part of life.
