A chipped tooth is common, from biting something hard, a fall or a sports injury. Small chips are usually not painful, but they can feel sharp and affect the look of your smile.
What is composite bonding?
Bonding uses the same tooth-coloured material as modern fillings. It’s applied to the tooth, shaped by hand and hardened with a light. It can:
- Repair chipped or broken edges
- Close small gaps between teeth
- Cover small stains
- Make short or uneven teeth look more even
The procedure
- The tooth surface is lightly prepared, usually with no injection needed.
- Composite matching your tooth colour is applied in layers.
- It is shaped, hardened with a light and polished.
Most repairs take one visit.
How long does bonding last?
Bonding can last several years. It can chip or stain over time, especially with habits like nail-biting, chewing pens or drinking a lot of coffee, but it can usually be repaired easily.
When is a crown better?
If a large part of the tooth has broken, or the nerve is exposed, a crown or root canal treatment may be needed. If a broken tooth is painful or sensitive, see a dentist promptly.
What to do if you chip a tooth
- Rinse your mouth with warm water.
- Keep any broken pieces in milk and bring them with you.
- Use a cold compress if there’s swelling.
- Call the practice to be seen.
