Dental care for older adults

More people are keeping their natural teeth into old age, which is good news for eating, speaking and confidence. Ageing does bring some specific dental challenges, but most can be managed with regular care.

Common issues in later life

  • Dry mouth, often a side effect of medication, which increases the risk of decay
  • Root decay, as receding gums expose softer root surfaces
  • Gum disease, which can lead to loose teeth
  • Worn or broken teeth and old fillings
  • Ill-fitting dentures as the gums and jawbone change shape
  • Difficulty brushing due to arthritis or reduced dexterity

Practical tips

  • Use a high-fluoride toothpaste if your dentist recommends it.
  • Sip water throughout the day and chew sugar-free gum if your mouth is dry.
  • An electric toothbrush or a brush with a thicker handle can be easier to hold.
  • Clean dentures daily, take them out at night and store them in water.
  • Bring a list of your medications to your dental visit.

Caring for a family member

If you look after an elderly parent or grandparent, help them keep up regular check-ups. Watch for signs of trouble such as avoiding certain foods, sore spots under dentures, or changes in eating habits.

Regular check-ups

Check-ups also include a screening of the soft tissues of the mouth, which is important as we get older. Dr H.B Mohamed treats patients of all ages at the practice in Lenasia. We offer dentures, relines and repairs, and claim directly from medical aids. Call 011 852 7866.
