Dentures: a practical guide

Dentures: a practical guide

Dentures are removable replacements for missing teeth. Modern dentures look natural and can make a big difference to eating, speaking and confidence.

Types of dentures

  • Full (complete) dentures replace all the teeth in the upper or lower jaw.
  • Partial dentures replace some teeth and clip onto the remaining natural teeth.
  • Immediate dentures are fitted on the day teeth are removed, so you’re never without teeth. They usually need relining as the gums heal.
  • Implant-retained dentures clip onto dental implants for extra stability.

The process

Making dentures usually takes several visits: impressions, bite records, a try-in of the teeth in wax so you can see the look and fit, and the final fitting.

Getting used to new dentures

  • Start with soft food cut into small pieces, and chew on both sides.
  • Read aloud to help your speech adjust.
  • Expect some sore spots in the first weeks. We can adjust the denture to relieve them.
  • Extra saliva is normal at first and settles down.

Caring for dentures

  • Take them out and rinse after meals.
  • Brush them daily with a soft brush and a denture cleaner, not toothpaste, which can scratch.
  • Take them out at night and keep them in water.
  • Clean your gums, tongue and any remaining teeth.

Relines and repairs

Your gums and jawbone change shape over time, so dentures can become loose. A reline refits the base to your gums. We also repair cracked dentures and broken teeth.
