Wisdom teeth are the third molars at the very back of the mouth. They usually come through between the ages of 17 and 25. Many people’s jaws don’t have enough room for them.
When wisdom teeth cause problems
- Impaction: the tooth is stuck under the gum or against the tooth in front.
- Pericoronitis: infection of the gum over a partly erupted tooth, causing pain, swelling and bad taste.
- Decay in the wisdom tooth or the neighbouring tooth, because the area is hard to clean.
- Cysts: rarely, a fluid-filled sac forms around an impacted tooth.
Do they always need removing?
No. Wisdom teeth that come through straight, are healthy and can be cleaned don’t need removing. Your dentist will examine the teeth and take an X-ray to see their position before recommending treatment.
The procedure
Wisdom teeth are removed under local anaesthetic. Impacted teeth may need a small cut in the gum and sometimes the tooth is divided into pieces to remove it gently. If you’re anxious, removal under sedation can be arranged at the practice with Joburg Sedation.
Recovery
Expect swelling and some discomfort for a few days. Use cold compresses for the first day, eat soft foods, avoid smoking and straws, and rinse gently with salt water from the second day.
