What is a scale and polish?

What is a scale and polish?

Even if you brush carefully, plaque builds up in places your toothbrush misses. Within days, it starts to harden into tartar (calculus), which sticks firmly to teeth and can only be removed professionally.

Why tartar matters

Tartar is rough, so it attracts more plaque. Near the gums, it causes inflammation, bleeding and eventually gum disease. It also traps stains from tea, coffee and smoking.

What happens during a scale and polish

  • Scaling: tartar is removed from above and just below the gumline using an ultrasonic scaler and fine hand instruments.
  • Polishing: teeth are polished with a gritty paste to remove surface stains and smooth the surface.
  • Advice: we show you any areas that need extra attention at home.

Most people find a clean comfortable. If your gums are sensitive, let us know and we can numb the area.

How often?

Most people benefit from a clean every six months. If you have gum disease, smoke, or build up tartar quickly, more frequent cleaning may be recommended.

After your clean

Your teeth may feel a little sensitive for a day or two, and gums may bleed slightly if they were inflamed. Keep brushing and cleaning between your teeth, and the gums will settle.

Cost

A scale and polish at Dr H.B Mohamed’s practice in Lenasia starts from R600 for cash patients. Most medical aids cover two cleanings a year, and we claim directly. See our fees.
