Many people grind or clench their teeth without knowing it, often while asleep. Occasional grinding does little harm, but regular grinding can wear teeth down and cause pain.
Signs you may be grinding
- Waking with a sore jaw, headache or earache
- Worn, flat or chipped teeth
- Sensitive teeth
- A partner hearing grinding at night
- Tired or tight jaw muscles
- Clicking or pain in the jaw joint
Common causes
- Stress and anxiety
- Sleep problems, including snoring and sleep apnoea
- Caffeine, alcohol and smoking
- Some medications
- An uneven bite
How it is treated
- Night guard: a custom-made plastic guard worn while you sleep protects your teeth and reduces strain on the jaw. Shop-bought guards are less precise and can be uncomfortable.
- Repairing damage: worn or broken teeth may need fillings or crowns.
- Lifestyle changes: cutting down on caffeine and alcohol and finding ways to manage stress can help.
- Awareness by day: if you clench during the day, try to keep your lips together and teeth slightly apart.
Why treat it?
Over time, grinding can crack teeth, break fillings and wear teeth down. Treating it early protects your teeth and avoids more costly repairs.
