Teeth naturally darken with age, and tea, coffee, red wine and smoking add surface stains. Whitening can lighten the natural colour of your teeth safely when it’s done under a dentist’s supervision.
How whitening works
Whitening gels contain hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide. These break down stains inside the enamel, making teeth lighter. In South Africa, products containing higher concentrations of peroxide may only be supplied by dental professionals.
Professional whitening options
- Home whitening with custom trays: we make trays that fit your teeth precisely and give you professional-strength gel to use at home for a set period.
- In-chair whitening: a stronger gel is applied at the practice for faster results.
Your dentist will recommend an option based on your teeth and goals.
What about shop-bought kits?
Over-the-counter kits contain weaker gels, and one-size trays can let gel leak onto the gums, causing irritation. Some whitening toothpastes only remove surface stains and can be abrasive.
Is whitening for everyone?
- Fillings, crowns and veneers don’t change colour.
- Whitening isn’t suitable during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
- Decay and gum problems should be treated first.
- Some discolouration, such as from certain medications, responds less well.
Side effects
Temporary sensitivity is common and usually settles within a few days. Using a toothpaste for sensitive teeth helps.
