Tooth-coloured fillings: what to expect

Tooth-coloured fillings: what to expect

When decay creates a hole in a tooth, a filling removes the decay and seals the tooth to stop it spreading. Today most fillings are tooth-coloured composite, which blends in with the rest of your tooth.

Signs you may need a filling

  • Sensitivity to sweet, hot or cold
  • Food getting stuck in one spot
  • A rough edge or hole you can feel with your tongue
  • A dark spot or discolouration

Often there are no symptoms at all, which is why check-ups and X-rays matter.

What happens during a filling

  • The area is numbed with local anaesthetic.
  • The decay is gently removed.
  • The tooth is cleaned and prepared so the filling bonds well.
  • Composite is placed in layers and set with a curing light.
  • The filling is shaped and polished to fit your bite.

Most fillings take 30 to 60 minutes.

After your filling

Your lip and tongue may be numb for a few hours, so avoid hot drinks and chewing until the feeling returns. Mild sensitivity for a few days is normal. If your bite feels high or uneven, contact us so we can adjust it.

How long do fillings last?

Composite fillings can last many years with good care. Their lifespan depends on their size, where they are in the mouth, and habits such as grinding.

Cost

At Dr H.B Mohamed’s practice in Lenasia, fillings start from R600 for cash patients. The exact cost depends on the size and number of surfaces. We claim directly from all medical aids. See our fees.
