Saliva does far more than keep your mouth comfortable. It washes away food, neutralises acid and contains minerals that repair early damage to enamel. When saliva flow drops, the risk of decay and gum problems rises quickly.
Signs of a dry mouth
- A sticky, dry feeling in the mouth
- Difficulty swallowing or speaking
- Cracked lips and a sore tongue
- Bad breath
- Dentures that rub or don’t stay in place
Common causes
- Medications, including some for blood pressure, depression, allergies and pain
- Diabetes and some other medical conditions
- Mouth breathing and snoring
- Not drinking enough water
- Smoking, alcohol and caffeine
- Radiation treatment to the head and neck
Relief and protection
- Sip water regularly through the day.
- Chew sugar-free gum or suck sugar-free sweets to stimulate saliva.
- Use a humidifier at night if you breathe through your mouth.
- Avoid alcohol-based mouthwashes.
- Use fluoride toothpaste, and ask about high-fluoride products.
- Ask your doctor whether a medication could be the cause. Don’t stop any medicine without medical advice.

A dry mouth can lead to decay along the gumline and around fillings very quickly. More frequent check-ups help catch problems early. Book a visit with Dr H.B Mohamed in Lenasia on 011 852 7866.
