Gum disease: stages and treatment

Gum disease: stages and treatment

Gum disease is an infection of the tissues that hold your teeth in place. It often develops slowly and without pain, which is why many people don’t realise they have it.

The stages

  • Gingivitis: gums are red, swollen and bleed when brushing. The damage is reversible with good cleaning.
  • Early periodontitis: the infection spreads below the gumline, and pockets form between the gums and teeth.
  • Advanced periodontitis: bone supporting the teeth is lost. Teeth may become loose, shift or fall out.

Risk factors

  • Poor brushing and cleaning between teeth
  • Smoking
  • Diabetes
  • Family history
  • Stress and some medications
  • Hormonal changes, such as pregnancy

How gum disease is treated

  • Professional cleaning to remove plaque and tartar
  • Deep cleaning (root planing): cleaning below the gumline and smoothing the root surfaces so gums can reattach, usually under local anaesthetic
  • Improving home care with the right brushes and interdental cleaners
  • Regular maintenance visits to keep the disease under control
  • Referral to a gum specialist (periodontist) for advanced cases

Gum health and general health

Research has linked gum disease with diabetes, heart disease and pregnancy complications. Keeping your gums healthy is good for your whole body.
